Student stories · Started, finished, on time

Finished.
On time.

Every story here names the batch, the start date and the finish. That is the whole Meridian idea — and it is also, students tell us, why they finished.

Portrait of Jess M.

French A2 — Speak from Week One

“I booked the March batch because the date was printed. Ten weeks later I held a ten-minute conversation with my host family in Lyon — in French, start to finish.”

Jess had tried apps for two years. “I had a 400-day streak and couldn't order lunch,” she says. What changed was embarrassingly simple: a Wednesday, a room, and nine other people who would notice if she wasn't there.

Claire's French-only rule did the rest. “Week two, I wanted to ask how to say ‘the bill’ and I had to build the sentence out of words I knew. It came out wrong and everyone laughed, including me. From then on it stopped feeling like school.”

Her host family in Lyon got the full ten minutes in May. She is now on French B1 — and yes, she booked it because the January date was printed.

Years old at her first gig

Helen R. — the gig at fifty-two

“I bought the guitar at forty-nine and it lived behind the sofa for three years. The ensemble's rule did it — a full song by week three, in front of people, whether you're ready or not. I was not ready. It didn't matter.”

Helen played rhythm on all four songs at the end-of-term gig, in a real venue, with her grandchildren in the second row. She has re-booked for next term. “The date's printed,” she says. “So I'll be there.”

Grades above school prediction

Sana A. — a parent's view of GCSE Maths

“Every mock came home marked, with a note I could actually read. No surprises in May — Yusuf walked in knowing his grade because he'd already sat the paper three times in Room 3.”

Sana booked the hybrid batch so Yusuf could join online during a family trip abroad. “Same teacher, same Monday, from a kitchen table in Bradford and once from Dubai. The timetable just held.”

Saturdays from zero to a working programme

Priya K. — Python, sorted

“The countdown on the course page did it. I stopped ‘meaning to learn Python’ and started on the Saturday it said. By week eight my programme sorted my whole photo library — 11,000 photos, renamed and filed.”

Priya's project week programme now runs every Sunday on her laptop. Dev's review ran to two pages. “He suggested three improvements and a whole next course. I've booked it.”

Glazed bowls, kept. One vase, kept anyway.

Dan W. — six Tuesdays at the wheel

“Six Tuesdays, four glazed bowls, one very wonky vase I refuse to throw away. Tom never once said ‘good enough’ — he showed me the fix instead. There's a difference, and you can drink out of it.”

Dan came for a birthday present and stayed for Glazing & Finishing. His bowls are in daily use; the vase holds pens. “It leaks,” he admits. “It holds pens brilliantly.”
