Talk first.
Grammar when it serves.

B1 is where Spanish stops being a school subject and starts being a tool. This course is built entirely around speaking: every session opens with ten minutes of paired conversation, and new grammar is introduced only when the group needs it to say something.

Groups are capped at twelve so everyone talks in every session. Ana corrects as she goes — kindly, briefly, and always with the fix, never just the error. Homework is one short voice note a week, marked and returned before the next session.

By week ten most students can hold a twenty-minute conversation, handle a phone call, and tell a story in the past tense without stopping. The course also covers the DELE B1 speaking paper for anyone planning to sit it.

How the
course runs

Same shape every week: teaching first, then practice with the teacher close by. Open a block to see what you will do — and what you leave with.

Introductions beyond the script: where you're from, what you do, what you actually like doing. Present tense rebuilt for speed, plus the questions that keep a conversation alive.

You leave with: a two-minute introduction you can deliver without notes.

The preterite tense through stories: weekends, journeys, disasters. Sessions run as story rounds — everyone tells one, the group retells it back.

You leave with: a spoken story about your last holiday, faults and all.

The imperfect, and how Spanish chooses between the two pasts. Childhood descriptions, old jobs, how your town used to be.

You leave with: a five-minute description of a place as it was.

Future forms, conditional politeness, and making arrangements: booking, changing, cancelling, negotiating times and prices.

You leave with: a completed phone role-play — a booking changed twice.

Agreeing, disagreeing and holding a position on real topics: work, cities, food, football. Introduction to the subjunctive where conversation needs it.

You leave with: a ten-minute debate, in Spanish, that you survived.

A full simulated conversation assessment in the final session — twenty minutes, recorded, with written feedback within the week. Then drinks, in Spanish.

You leave with: your recorded assessment and Ana's written feedback.

Your teacher

Ana Beltrán

Ana trained as a language teacher in Seville and has taught in Leeds for nine years, the last six at Meridian. She runs every Spanish course on the timetable and the French conversation groups when Claire is away.

Her rule is simple: nobody leaves a session without speaking. Classes are built around real exchanges — market haggling, phone calls, arguments about football — with the grammar pulled out of what you just tried to say, not the other way round.

Good to know before session one

  • Speak from minute one. Every session opens with paired conversation — bring something to say about your week.
  • Homework is a voice note. One short recording a week, marked and returned before Monday.
  • Miss a session? Room 1 sessions are not recorded, but Ana posts the week’s materials and phrases in the course channel.
  • DELE candidates: tell Ana at enrolment and she’ll add the exam-paper practice to your homework.
